Met Gala 2019

Michael At The Met

The glitz! The glamour! The gowns! The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala is always one of the most magical Mondays of the year—and 2019 is no exception. When the museum announced that this year’s Costume Institute exhibition (which dictates the gala’s annual theme) would be “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” visions of pitched tents and toasted marshmallows might’ve come to mind. But the concept is more about culture than campfire songs. The exhibition is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on ‘Camp,’” in which she characterizes camp by “its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” The antithesis of seriousness, camp is playful. It celebrates the joy of fashion with dramatic extremes like over-the-top silhouettes, elaborate embroidery, and a tongue-in-cheek sensibility.

Naturally, Michael couldn’t wait to dive in. Taking cues from noted camp style icons like Diana Ross, Cher, Liberace and Elton John, he designed exclusive looks for six fabulous women (including his date, supermodel Gigi Hadid) that combine theatricality, extravagance and a hint of humor. Below, Michael describes his vision for some of the Met Gala’s best-dressed guests—from beginning sketch to final look.

Gigi Hadid

“This hand-embroidered cape and sequined catsuit with matching platform boots make Gigi a style superhero and the head-to-toe look is just the right mix of daring and drama for The Met Ball.”

Emily Blunt

“The ultimate Golden Girl—talk about camp! Opulence, shine, extravagance...Emily’s gown has it all. And the mega-sized flowers and Stephen Jones fascinator give it a wink of drama.”

— MICHAEL KORS

Zoe Saldana

“What could be campier than a copper disco dolly out for a night on the town? This dance-inspired gown in copper paillettes makes Zoe a total dancing queen.”

— MICHAEL KORS

Bette Midler

“Bette gives ‘social butterfly’ a whole new meaning. We worked on the design together, and she kept asking for more butterflies. I love that in this Stephen Jones hat, she has literally flipped her lid.”

— MICHAEL KORS

Sophie Von Haselberg

“Sophie is literally heating things up. She’s not just camp...she’s a campfire! I love the outlandishness of it, and the Stephen Jones headpiece is the perfect fashion fuel for this flame.”

— MICHAEL KORS

Tiffany Haddish

“If Elton John and Liberace had a baby, it would be this sequined zebra suit. The look is the perfect embodiment of Tiffany—party-ready but polished, with just the right amount of flair.”
